Po-boy dreams

I would just like to announce that, were not for some “*&^%$#-clowns” who are holding my fiance hostage at work, I could be eating a roast beef po-boy with horseradish on it right this minute. Instead, I am at the computer lab on a Friday night (opening night of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy!)

This week has been a little hectic — it was my last week of classes, and I’m trying to plan the basics for this wedding before I leave for SE Asia.

I also finished Motherless Brooklyn, which Clinton loaned me. It’s a fantastic gritty crime novel about a guy with Tourette’s Syndrome who tries to figure out who murdered his Italian mobster boss. It’s scary and hilarious at the same time.

Here’s what my bouquet will look like, if you want to see.

Have a great weekend!

Glowing jellyfish

This afternoon after class and work I’m meeting with the potential wedding planner named Susan and then Clinton and I will get our engagement pictures taken in Audubon Park before we tour a possible reception venue called Venusian Gardens, which is supposed to look amazing at night because of all the glowing jellyfish sculptures. Then it’s off to the movies for our Friday night date. Have a great weekend!

Busy week

Wow, a lot has happened in the last week.
I finished a couple books:
The Calcutta Chromosome (a medical mystery novel about malaria, which was disappointing)
and
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, by Anne Fadiman, which was EXCELLENT.

On Friday evening I saw Sin City with Clinton and some friends. It was amazing, artistically speaking, but Clinton and I got into a fight afterward about the overly idealized supermodel-type ninja prostitute women and the fact that men are the cause of most war, crime and especially violence against women.

On Saturday I ran 5 miles at Audubon park, then Clinton and I biked to the French Quarter Festival to listen to music, examine funny folk art, watch a troupe of street-performing acrobats, eat an “oyster patty” and a “snow ball” before biking home and going to 2.5 hours of Couples Yoga at the Wild Lotus.

On Sunday we went to the First Unitarian Universalist Church and signed ourselves up for a Potluck/Game Night this Friday.

Monday evening I ran 5 miles at Audubon park again, and then Clinton and I started a 5-week course on Discovering Buddhism at the church, which I think will improve my Thailand and Vietnam experience this summer. I also just found out I’ll get a tax refund this year! Whooppee!

Last night we watched The Outlaw Josey Wales on DVD, starring Clint Eastwood, which was a fantastic Western about revenge and one really badass outlaw.

Have a great week, everyone.

Another great day!

Today I just found out that I have also received the Population Fellows Programs’ Graduate Applied Project (GAP) Mini-Grant for my summer work in family planning research and programming in Vietnam!

It doesn’t get better than this.

One of the best days

Hello all,
Today was one of the best days I’ve had in a long time.
Not only did Dr. VanLandingham tell our group project team that we had the best student presentation he’s ever seen, but it was announced today that I am one of the five recipients of the Hewlett Foundation Travel Grant of $2000 for my work in Thailand and Vietnam this summer.

Fun in Eufaula

Dad and Clinton and I drove 6 hours this weekend to Eufaula, Alabama for the town’s annual Pilgrimage festival and to visit Clinton’s parents. Be sure to check out the pictures!
